Song and Silence
I am part of a small group of singers who run “Song and Silence” sessions at Sheffield Cathedral at Wednesday lunchtime once a month, and “We Who Sing Pray Twice” sessions at Whirlow Spirituality Centre one evening on alternate months. These sessions are open to anyone interested.
We start with a gentle body and voice warm-up and then move on to learn songs and chants in up to four parts. Songs are learnt by ear, with simple hand movements as a guide, and no musical experience is needed. Once the songs feel embedded, we start singing them repetitively, with someone leading each part, so no-one is on their own.
The focus of the session is singing the songs together and listening to the harmonies created. As they wash over us, they can be a way into stillness, prayer or meditation in the silence that follows.
Please get in touch if you would like to know the dates of upcoming sessions in either venue.Next: About Gill Upham
